SECRETARY OF DEFENSE DONALD RUMSFELD'S 1948 NEW TRIER HIGH SCHOOL YEARBOOK

Another nice collectible for your consideration. You are looking on a 1948 New Trier High School Yearbook with future MLB pitcher Peter Burnside and future U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. This product is for the 1948 New Trier High School Yearbook (New Trier, Illinois), titled "Echos." This was the Sophomore year for future Secretary of Donald Rumsfeld, who was using the name Don Rumsfeld and the Senior year for Peter Burnside. There are a lot of student and staff signatures in this book, including a 1948 signed message from Donald Rumsfeld to the original yearbook owner. It notes "To a great girl - Don Runsfeld." There is also a Joan Rumsfeld in the graduating class, likely a relative of Donald Rumsfeld. Many, maybe most, of the photographs are not labeled. However, I was able to find Rumsfield in the Freshman Baseball Team group photo (page 28) and Fresh-Soph Wrestling Team group photo (page 81). Peter Burnside, a Senior, is much easier to locate. He appears in the book in the Varsity Baseball group photo (page 27); same page also notes Burnside pitched 19 consecutive scoreless innings; making a basketball shot in a posed photograph that shows the starting team...perhaps against the Freshman/Sophomore? (page 73); standing under the basket waiting for the basketball to drop (page 77); in the Varsity Basketball group photo (page 79); and in his Senior Class photo (page 130). The book is also signed by the school's principal, Matthew Gaffney. The book appears to have belonged to Ruth Hicks. It is in very good shape overall. This is a little musk smell. Spine and binding feel a little weak but all pages are intact and present. This is the first time I have found the signature of a notable in a high school yearbook! Former Secretary of Defense Donald Henry Rumsfeld was born July 9, 1932. Rumsfield served in the United States Navy from 1954 to 1957 as a naval aviator and flight instructor. In 1957, he transferred to Naval Reserve, Rumsfield was elected to the United States House of Representatives for Illinios' 13th congressional district in 1962, at the age of 30, and was re-electeed in 1964, 1966 and 1968. Rumsfield resigned from Congress in 1969 to serve in the Nixon administration as Director of Office of Economic Opportunity, Assistant to the President, a Cabinet position. Rumsfield was named Counselor to the President in December 1970, and then Director of the Economic Stabilization Program, which he served in 1971 and 1972. In February 1972, Rumsfield left Washington to served as U.S. Ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Belgium. Called back to the White House by the new president Gerald Ford, Rusmfield served as White House Chief of Staff from 1974 to 1975. In October 1975, Ford reshuffled his cabinet in the "Halloween Massacre" and named Rumsfield the 13th U.S. Secretary of Defense. Rumsfeld oversaw the transition to an all-volunteer military. He sought to reverse the gradual decline in the defense budget and to build up U.S. strategic and conventional forces, skillfully undermining Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in the SALT talks. He oversaw the development of cruise missiles, the B-1 bomber and a major naval shipbuilding program. From 1977 to 1985 Rumsfeld served as Chief Executive Officer, President, and then Chairman of G. D. Searle & Company, a worldwide pharmaceutical company. Folowing this, Rumsfeld was a member of the National Academy of Public Administration and a member of the boards of trustees of the Gerald R. Ford Foundation; the Eisenhower Exchange Fellowship; the Hoover Institution at Stanford and the National Park Foundation. Rumsfeld also served as Special Envoy to the Middle East for Ronald Reagon and as the National Chairman for 1996 Bob Dole's Presidental campaign. Rumsfeld was named the 21st Defense Secretary soon after President George W. Bush took office in 2001. He immediately announced a series of sweeping reviews intended to transform the U.S. military into a lighter force. Following the September 11, 2001 attacks, Rumsfeld led the military planning and execution of the US invation of Afghanistan and the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Bush retained Rumsfeld after his 2004 presidential re-election. However after increasing pressure from both policital parties, current and past military Generals and the media, on Rumsfeld on how he handled the Afghanistan and Iraq invasions, the use of torchure, Rumsfeld resigned. On November 8, 2006, a day after the mid-term elections, Bush annouced Rumsfeld would step down from his position. He is both the youngest (43 years old) and the oldest (74 years old) person to have served as Secretary of Defense as well as the only person to have served in the position for two non-consecutive terms.Former professional baseball pitcher Peter Willits Burnside was born July 2, 1930 in Evanston, Illinois. Burnside was signed by the New York Giants as an amateur free agent in 1949. Burnside made his MLB debut on September 20, 1955 and played in the Majors for eight season. Burnside played for the New York Giants (1955, 1957), the San Francisco Giants (1958), the Detroit Tigers (1959-1960), the Washington Senators (1961-62, 1963) and the Baltimore Orioles (1963). After retiring as a player, Burnside earned a masters degree from Northwestern University and was a teacher/coach at New Trier High School for 26 years.
