Former professional football player Steve Young was born as Jon Steven Young on October 11, 1961 in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. Young got an early start in sports when he attended Greenwich High School in Greenwich, Connecticut. Here he starred in football, baseball and basketball...and had a 4.2 grade average. He played NCAA college football at Brigham Young University (BYU), which was founded by Steve's great-great-great-grandfather. In Young's 1983 senior year as the Cougars' starting QB, he was runner up for the Heisman award (behind Mike Rozier) and an All-American. He was also named 1983 quarterback on The Sporting News College All-America first team and earned the Davey O'Brien Award. Young left BYU and joined the new USFL (United States Football League) where he was drafted in the first round (10th picked overall) by the Los Angeles Express. When the defunct league folded, the NFL had a supplemental draft and Young was picked by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round (1st overall). Young signed with the Buccaneers on September 10, 1985. In 1987, he was traded to San Francisco as back-up to legendary quarter Joe Montana. During the next four years, Young saw limited action. However, after the NY Giants took Montana out on an injury, Young took instant command of the field. Young finished the season with a league high 101.8 passing rating, the first of four straight passing titles and six during his career. In 1994, he completed 324 or 461 passes for 3,969 yards and 35 touchdowns, finishing with a record 112.8 passing rating. That year Young led the 49ers through the playoffs and past the Dallas Cowboys to make it to Super Bowl XXIX. In Super Bowl XXIX, Young passed for a record six touchdowns and earned MVP honors. Played 15 seasons in the NFL and retiring in 1999 after suffering his forth concussion in three years. He left the game with career records for highest passer rating (96.8) and best completion percentage (64.4). Played in seven NFC championship game (1988-1990, 1992-1994 and 1997 seasons). Earned countless honors including NFL Player of the Year (POY) in 1992, Seven starting Pro Bowl invitations (1992-1998), All-Pro four times, named quarters for The Sporting News NFL All-Pro team three times (1992, 1994 and 1998), Sporting News NFL Player of the Year in 1992 and 1994. In 'retirement", Young has become an analyst for ESPN (weekly) and ABC Sports (for playoff and Super Bowl games). Steve Young was enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001 and enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio on August 7, 2005, along with Miami Dolphin's Dan Marino, and was the first left-handed quarterback to be so honored."My favorite moment still was the five minutes after the Super Bowl when we were alone in the locker room. Just the 50 players and coaches kneeling in the Lords prayer, then looking up at each other and realizing that, yes, we were world’s champions. No media, no one, just us." Steve Young from his HOF induction speech.Be sure to add me to your favorites list!
