METEOR CRATER RIM POSTCARDThis is a postcard of the famous METEOR CRATER, located beside Route 66 in Northern Arizona. It features a nice real color photo view of the crater, showing the large blocks of Kaibab limestone on the rim (something that is commonly seen in meteorite books but this is the first time I have seen it on a postcard). Also seen is a view into the crater and the remains of the first mining attempt. Each postcard has also been autographed by the photographer. Back reads "METEOR CRATER NORTHERN ARIZONA Blocks of Kaibab limestone sitting on the rim of Meteor Crater in Northern Arizona. These large blocks of rock were displaced during the meteorite impact that formed this scientific wonder. In the center of the crater is the remains of a drilling attempt for a large meteorite treasure thought at one time to be buried in its bottom." Postcard is in mint condition. The card measures 5 1/2 inches long and a little over 4 inches wide and was limited to a print of only 1000. It is in very good condition. Note the bottom left corner. Each postcard has been hand signed by the photographer. The scanner has made the signature look purple and blurry. Postcards are boldly signed. It was 1871 when a crater was first mentioned in Coconino County, Arizona, U.S.A. Approximately 3850 feet wide, the unusual terrain is an impressive sight. The origin of the crater however was a debate for many years with most believing it the crater to be a gas blowout. In 1902, Philadelphia lawyer and Mining Engineer, Daniel Barringer visited the crater he at once suspected the crater's cosmic origin. After making a mining claim, Barringer and a group of investors started drilling in the crater for the large mass of meteorite he believed to be in the bottom, and the large commercial profits that would be make from its mineral values. About 30 holes were dug in the crater floor, set backs were numerous. Flooding of drilling holes, snapped drills, and slow work made the job frustrating to the workers.Harvey H. Nininger, a college professor from a small Kansas university, spent several years studying the crater and its surrounding. In 1952 while making a walk, he noticed part of the crater rim torn into by the highway department. Here he found nickel positive glass impactite. The craters meteorite origin was conclusive. It was shown that the meteorite was much smaller then Barringer dreamed but this was not the worst news that Barringer would have learned had he lived longer. Physics showed the meteorite could not survive the impact. The crater was from a meteorite impact yes, but the impact made the meteorite explode. No large amount of meteorite material would ever come from crater's floor. This great natural wonder off U.S. 66 near Winslow is 550 feet down, over 4,000 feet across. Rim rises 170 feet above the surrounding plain. The crater and the site around the crater are now a National Park and is protected by the National Park Services. Barringer is respected for his insight and his drive for fighting against the scientific community in a cause and a belief he was true. Being the oldest proven crater, Meteor Crater has also been given several other names including, Coon Butte, Crater Mountain or Barringer Crater.Be sure to add me to your favorites list!FREE US shipping.
