After McGwire graduated from high school, the Montréal Expos drafted him, but he turned down their offer and instead attended the University of Southern California (USC). After being a member of the 1984 USA Olympic Baseball team, McGwire was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the first round (10th overall) of the 1984 MLB Amateur Draft. Worked his way up the minors quickly and was promoted to the big leagues. Played his first MLB game on August 22nd 1986 and made an instant impact. Shared the MLB lead in home runs his first year, when he set the MLB record for home runs by a rookie with 49. This earned him a trip to his first All-Star game and the 1987 American League Rookie of the Year award winner. For the next several years McGwire won several Golden Glove and All-Star awards, however it would be 1998 when "Big Mac" became a legend. After leading the league in homeruns in both 1996, and 1997, the A's traded McGwire to the St. Louis Cardinals for three players. In 1998, McGwire captivated the nation with his home run ability. He engaged in a memorable home run duel with Chicago Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa that lasted until the season's final day. McGwire finished with the year with 70 home runs, and shattered Roger Maris season home run record (61). Sosa finished with 66, the second highest total in major-league history. McGwire played his last game on October 7th, 2001. He made the All-Star team nine times, 1987-1999 & 2000. McGwire's six-year combination with Jose Canseco led the A's to three American League pennants and the 1989 World Series championship. Ended his career with 583 home runs, which was then fifth-most in history. Led Major League Baseball in home runs five times. He hit 50 or more home runs four seasons in a row (1996-1999), leading Major League Baseball in homers all four seasons.Be sure to add me to your favorites list!FREE US shipping.
