Ward attended Fresno State University where he played in 1997, 1999 & 2000, earning Freshman All-American honors in 1999. Appearing in 20 games for Fresno, Ward gained 1,091 yards on 197 carries with 11 touchdowns and made three catches for 49 yards. Tranferring to Ottawa University (Kansas) in 2003 for his final year of eligibity, Ward set NAIA single-single records with 2,061 rushing yards, 28 touchdowns and 7.8 yards per carry (263 attempts). The New York Jets selected Derrick Ward in the 7th round of the 2004 NFL Draft, but he would never play for them. When Ward failed to make the Jets roster his rookie season, the New York Giants signed him off the Jets practice squad on October 13, 2004. Ward played for the New York Giants from 2004 to 2008. In 2008, Ward rushed for 1,025 yards including 215 rushing yards in a 34-28 overtime victory over the Carolina Panthers that clinched homefield advantage throughout the 2009 NFL Playoffs.
