On November 22, 1935, Doerr was purchased by the Boston Red Sox from the Hollywood team in the PCL for $75,000. Doerr made his MLB debut on April 20, 1937 and played his last game September 7, 1951, playing his entire 14-year career with the Boston Red Sox. Team leader during the 40's when Ted Williams called him "the silent captain of the Red Sox", Doerr frequently led American League second basemen in double plays, putouts and assists and set the American League for second base for handling 414 consecutive chances without an error. A clutch hitter, Doerr batted .409 in the 1946 World Series and had six seasons over 100 RBIs, and was a 9-time All-Star selectino (1941-1944, 1946-1948, 1950-1951). Doerr was a scout from the Red Sox from 1957 to 1966 and the team's first base coach from 1967 to 1969, resigning when manager Dick Williams was fired in September 1969. He finished his MLB career as the hitting coach for the expansion Toronto Blue Jays from 1977 to 1981. Bob Doerr was enshrined into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1986 (by Veterans Committee) and his #1 jersey number has been retired by the Boston Red Sox.Be sure to add me to your favorites list!FREE US shipping.
