Smith attended the Ohio State University where he played NCAA college football with the Ohio State Buckeyes from 2003 to 2006. Smith entered his 2004 sophomore season as the backup quarterback to Justin Zwick, but took over when Zwick was injured halfway through the season, winning four of the five games he started. During his junior year, Smith won 10 of the 11 games he played in passing for 2,282 yards with 16 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions with a passer rating of 167.87. During Smith's 2006 senior season, he led the Buckeyes to an defeated regular season, with high profile road games against defending National Champion Texas, and later against the Iowa Hawkeyes. Smith completed 203 of 311 attempts (65.3%) for 2542 yards and 30 touchdowns (6 interceptions), and rushed for 204 yards and a touchdown. For his efforts, Troy Smith was named the 72nd Heisman Trophy Award winner. In winning the 2006 Heisman Trophy, Smith took a record 86.7% of the first place votes. Beside the Heisman, Smith recieved among other honors, the 2006 College Football Player of the Year award, the 2006 Archie Griffin Award, the 2006 Walter Camp Award, the 2006 Davey O'Brien Award and was the 2006 QB of the Year and the 2006 Associated Press Player of the Year.
